The kids asked why we couldn't just try harder. Why we had to give up. How do you explain to children that sometimes love isn't enough? That two good people can be wrong for each other. That staying hurts more than leaving. They're too young to understand compromise vs. sacrifice. Trying vs. surviving. I hope they never have to learn what we learned. That love can die slowly.
